What Can I Plant in a Tight Space to Get Height and Color?

I’ve got a lot of things working against me here, so hopefully you can help! The space is approximately 3′ by 6′ and abutts a cement walkway and my house. I live in northern Wisconsin – Zone 4. The soil is clay based and the area gets full afternoon sun. The 2-story wall of my house is just screaming for something tall to break it up and the area needs some color. I have researched site after site and forum after forum but am unable to find an answer. I was originally thinking of a Japanese Maple. But I think the area is too hot and sunny in the summer, but I love the color and the beautiful leaves. Please help!
