What can I plant in a shady corner in poor soil?

This is a very sheltered corner of the garden under some high trees. The ground surface is poor for planting due to tree roots.

The best thing you can put under your trees is mulch. Digging around under a tree can harm the tree's surface roots. Not only that but you add plants that will compete with the tree for nutrition and water.

A perennial groundcover for shade would work best because you don't need to replant each year. Ajuga, periwinkle, hostas and liriope are possibilities.
