Q.What can I plant in a full shade flower bed that is underneath a tree?

Zone Iowa, gardening zone 5 | Anonymous added on July 7, 2020 | Answered

Hello! I have a flower bed that is underneath a tree located at the front of my house. I am having trouble figuring out what to plant there. It is partial to full shade and gets some sun in the morning. Any ideas on what I can plant that would be okay? I would like to have a perennial so it comes back every year. Thanks!

Here is a list of shade-loving flowers and also an article that cautions against planting under a tree. Digging around under a tree can disrupt the feeder roots close to the surface of the soil. The best thing you can put under a tree is mulch out to the dripline.
