Weed Killer

We will be planting a hedge in few months time but need to treat the area now to get rid of weeds. In the past we have used sodium chloride, as weeds are quite prolific, but we have only had a fence in that area before so it wasn’t a problem if the soil got affected. What would you suggest we use now to get rid of weeds so as not to affect the soil for when we plant the hedge.

If you have a few months time, I would actually recommend black or clear plastic. Pin it down over the area and let the sun do the work. It will cook the soil and will not only kill the weeds, but their seeds as well. This is called solarization.
