transplanted a mature tree last fall

We transplanted a mature tree last fall and we need to know how to tell if it is alive. We have tried scraping the trunk but cannot see any green. We would like to know if we need to get another live plant.

What kind of tree is it? There are no signs of life with regards to leafing or budding?

Brown dry bark during a scratch test typically indicates that the tree is dead. As an added assurance, I would also bend one of the branches to see if they are pliable or snap off with a dry crack.
