Q.Well Water Tastes Like Salt, Is It Ok to Water Plants

donnaloconnor added on April 15, 2011 | Answered

Purchased a house with own well, but the water tastes like it has a lot of sodium in it. Is it ok to water trees and sod with it, or what are some options we can do? We do not have a water softener and need options.

If the water is salty, it is likely not good for your plants, but take a sample to your local extension office and have them test it to be sure.

If it turns out that the water is not healthy for plants, consider collecting rainwater to water your plants. Rain barrels can be placed at downspouts and collect the water that falls on the roof. This collected water can also be mixed with the high sodium water to bring it down to an acceptable level of sodium for watering plants.
