knockout roses planted side by side

We have 3 knockout roses planted side by side. Two are new this year and one is 3 years old. The older one and one new one have leaves and stems turning brown and drying up. What would cause this and can they be saved and, if so, how?

They could be planted too close together and need more separation so that they are not constantly battling for nutrition, water and sunlight.
