my fig tree is looking sad

We had a bad ice storm last winter, and now this spring my fig tree is looking sad. Is it gone forever, or is there something I can do to save it? The small outer branches are reddish and feel squishy. There are no leaves.

Cut the squishy twigs off, also any dead brown-and-crispy branches. Cut everything back to live growth. Look for live tissue on trunk and larger branches by scraping the bark with a knife. If there’s green underneath, there’s still life. If there’s still life, the plant may rejuvenate. Even if all the wood is dead, if there is life in the roots, they may send up new shoots. Or you may want to start over with a more cold-hardy fig.
