Zone Southern California | busasusal added on August 3, 2014 | Answered

The leaves on my watermelon vines die at the beginning of the plant but the ends keep growing and the melons keep growing. What is going on?

Looks like the plant is not getting enough nutrients. This could be because the soil is weak and it could be because there is not enough water to support the plant taking up nutrients from the soil. I would recommend increasing water to the plant as well as giving it a dose of compost or manure tea or a water soluble fertilizer.

Another less like possibility is that it is a fungus, so as a precaution, treat the plant with a fungicide as well.
