Watering Lawn and Plants

People see me watering in the hot sun and say, “you are going to burn your plants. ” I realize that some of the water may evaporate and will be wasted, but ruining the plants due to the water magnifying the sun and burning ??

My question is: How does this differ from nature when on hot days a sudden brief rain occurs and then the sun comes out again, often feeling even hotter? I’ve heard this all my 70 years of gardening and nobody can explain the difference? Can you? I have even seen this in books.

It is a myth that you can burn a plant by watering during the day. It is simply not possible. You will lose more water to evaporation, but that is about the worst thing that will happen.
