Q.Wallflowers Flowering In 1st Year

Zone Exeter, EX5 2HH | Ignoramus added on August 26, 2024 | Answered

I sowed biennial wallflower seeds in early summer. They germinated well but are now quite leggy (although pinched out and in full light) and are flowering. Thompson and Morgan (whose seeds they are) do not know what is going on or how to deal with it. Should I cut off flowers now or after flowering this year, leave them to their own devices or give up and sow some more seeds now? Do you have any suggestions please? Thank you.

I couldn't really only think of one thing that would make them "bolt" like that. That will be some sort of major stress. These prefer things more dry then wet, so it could be that the area was just a little too moist. Another thing to consider is that They tend to prefer neutral to alkaline soils. And, yes, I might suggest trying to plant again. It is about that time to do so. For now, I'd test for any nutrient deficiencies and pH imbalances, as well as testing for the soil moisture content.
