volunteer trees coming up in our lawn

Question

We have a dogwood tree and had to reseed our grass under the tree. When preparing the soil for grass seed, I hit a number of roots and pulled them out or cut them out. We now have trees growing where I cut the roots. What is the best way to handle this invasion of new trees?
