Using Charcoal (bbq) ash in the garden or compost?

I read the article on using wood/fireplace ash in compost or directly in the garden, and it was very helpful, especially in regards to what type of wood was burned, but what about charcoal ash from the bbq? What kinds of changes to pH or salinity or other benefits can be wrought from this type of ash?

Typically, it is not recommended to use ash from BBQ charcoal due to the chemicals that are used to create it. It is best to pass on using this in your garden or compost.
