butternut squash

Two out of six of my butternut squash have strange brown whirls on the skin in the narrow area. What might this be? Are they still fit to eat? Just harvested two weeks ago and left in cool place.

Check to see if the squash has any soft spots on the flesh. The markings are likely nothing more then skin imperfections or trails from insects.

Wash the squash before storing.
