Tulips

I planted 75 Tulip and Daffodil bulbs last November. I used a bulb plugger and planted them carefully at the right depth, etc. We had a very mild winter with less than two weeks of freezing weather and less than 2″ of snow. Not one of the bulbs came up this spring, in 4 different areas of the yard. Tulips that I had planted 3 years ago did bloom. Could all the bulbs have been bad, or was it the mild winter? Will they bloom another year after it freezes or are they ruined?

It is hard to say for certain, though weather could have been a factor. Tulip bulbs need to go through a chilling period and with the mild winter may not have gotten cold enough for growing. The bulbs may have also succombed to rodents, like chipmucks, voles or squirrels. They love to feast on bulbs, especially those that are newly planted. It’s unlikely they will do anything this season, as it’s getting rather late for them now but you can look for them again next year or simply try your hand at planting some more.
