Trimming An Acer Tree

When is the best time to cut back an acer which has become a bit too tall for the garden? When and by how much can I cut/ trim back

This article on reduction pruning should help. When pruning, it is wise not to remove more than 25 to 30 percent of a tree or shrub at one time.
