Trimming a Fig Tree

I have a 15 year old fig tree that has been trimmed each dormant season. Branches are currently 8 to 10 ft long from main trunk. Knuckles have formed from prior pruning about 2-3 ft from trunk. Should branches be thinned and shortened several feet measuring from ends each year?

Prune all but the straightest of the small branches emerging from the knuckles, leaving about 4 inches above the knuckles themselves. These straight branches should line up with the largest part of the branch below the knuckle. As they gradually thicken and grow, the knobby joints will become less noticeable.
