Trimming An Orange Tree

I have an orange tree I started from seed about a year ago. It grew about 3-4 new inches since spring and is about 12 inches high now. Should I trim the top to promote more lower branches or leave it alone? This will be a container plant as we live in western New York so will be inside over winter.

It won't hurt to trim the top off! In fact, it will branch out in response to this. Once it does, you can choose what to keep and what to trim away, and keep it that way until you establish a branching structure to your liking.
