We have a red maple tree that is growing straight up. It is not spreading out. Do we need to prune it?

Generally a newly planted Red Maple does not need pruning.
The growth pattern may be due to the cultivator that you have planted.
Check the mature height and width of the variety that you have choses. Your tree is likely growing exactly the way it should be.
