Tree Roots Sticking Out All Over

Question

We have a tree that has roots sticking out all around it. We now have bricks on the dirt around the tree, but they are coming up because of the roots. We wanted to do a neater job of bricks, but are afraid we will kill the roots and thereby the tree. What else can we do? the area is probably 7ft. by 6ft. If we plant grass or put down sod it might choke out the tree roots and will not grown nicely with the roots coming up. What do you suggest we could do to have it look nice? Thank you for any ideas.

The best thing to do under any tree is lay down a couple of inches of hardwood mulch out to the drip line.
