Tree Roots Near Foundation

I currently have Norway maples and ash trees growing right next to my house, whose root systems are entering the foundation. I need to remove them. But I really want some trees on my small lot. Which trees have the deepest tap roots and the least aggressive horizontal roots so that I can plant some trees and not worry about root issues in the future. I thought of native oaks or hickories or even catalpa. What do you think? Are there better choices?

Japanese maple, dogwood, and lilac all make suitable foundation plantings, though any tree needs to be planted at least 5 feet from the foundation and 3 feet for shrubs. This article has some other suggestions that you may like:
