Transplanting Day Lilies

Some years ago my mother gave me a start of “old fashioned” single day lilies that came from my great grandmother. Over the years, they’ve become crowded and probably need to be thinned. When is the best time of year to do this? Any pointers?

Transplanting daylilies is easy. If your plants are just starting to emerge, you can dig and divide them now. Use a shovel to lift the entire clump. It's fine if it doesn't come up in one mass. Divide by simply pulling the sections apart. (if you find this impossible, divide using a spade) Take the opportunity to mix compost into the soil then replant the tubers. Here is a how-to guide for transplanting daylilies. Fortunately, they are very forgiving plants and will reliably return after thinning.
