Transplanting A Crape Myrtle From Soil To A Permanent Pot

Help Please My son has to move a crape myrtle from soil in the ground to a permanent pot as I am moving house. His question is around the use of current ground soil versus potting mix. Should he pull the plant out once dormant, completely wash all the dirt off the roots and try and repot it? or Should he cut a smaller root ball and move that with dirt attached and then backfill with potting mix.

You don't need to wash the dirt off. When you dig, try to get as much of the rootball as possible. Make sure the container will be big enough. Just shake off some of the excess dirt and move to container. Fill the rest of the container with potting soil.
