Tough Tomato Skins

I had a garden last year and am beginning one this year. Last year I got some tomatoes from my vines. I planted Romas, Better Boy, and a couple of other varieties. I feel as though my crop was not what it could have been and have amended the soil among other changes. My question to you is, why did my tomatoes have a tough, “leathery” skin, and is there anything I can do to fix the problem?

There are 3 things that normally affect tomato skin thickness and these are variety, water and heat. You may want to check if there is something preventing the plants from taking up enough water, or it is possible that they may need some shade.
