Tomatoes on Potatoes

My friend has tomatoes growing out of the top of his potato plants. Have you seen this before, and how does it happen?

Tomatoes and potatoes are in the same family and their leaves look very similar. It is likely that the tomato plant is in fact the ‘potato’ leaves. There is an off chance though that a tomato seed was in the soil or compost he used and then a volunteer tomato plant grew from that seed.
