How far up the stem should I clip the leaves when I plant my tomato plant

I'm not sure why you are clipping leaves, except that maybe they're lying on the soil? Healthy leaves feed the tomato plant so be sure to only clip the ones that aren't doing well. The stem of the tomato has tiny hairs - each of these is a potential root for the plant, so it's good to leave as much stem in the soil as possible. If you trim leaves too far up, the plant could get leggy or top heavy. Here's an article that may help:
