Tomato Plant Mystery Enemy

I just noticed that about 4 fairly major stems branching out from the main stem of two different tomato plants (Big Boys) was completely severed and apparently eaten. There was nothing left on the ground, no sign of pests and no slug trails on the plants. The severed stems were approximately 2 to 2. 5 feet above the ground. The more succulent, juicy young growth at the top of the plant (approx. 4 ft. above ground) was left untouched! Some have told me it is caused by a deer but my nearby hosta, a deer salad bar around these parts in CT, was also untouched. I have trapped all the chipmunks and there are no signs of any rabbits around, either. I’m at my wits end. I’m spraying the tomato plants with Liquid Fence animal repellent (deer & rabbit) as a precaution. Can you help me figure this out?
