Tiny Holes Around the Trees

My trees are dying I think. The leaves are turning brown just yesterday after a hard rain, and now we have tiny holes the size of a pencil eraser around the base of the tree. We have 4 trees and only 2 are already on their way to dying. What do I do to stop the tree from dying?

What kind of tree? How far from the ground are the holes? How many holes are there? Do you see insects? Is sap oozing out? How old are the trees?
