The center of my bird’s nest plant is brown and “crunchy” and appears to be dying. What would cause this?

This can be quite normal. This can also happen if there is too much nutrients near the roots. They are epiphytes and will easily burn. If you can include a photo then I will be able to help you a little better. It will be much easier to see what is going on.
