canes on my knockout roses are black

The canes on my knockout roses are black. The leaves have dried and are falling and the bush appears dead. This has happened over about a week, also has affected the mums planted nearby. Any help?

It sure sounds like either something got poured on the soils around the bushes and plants or they got sprayed with an herbicide spray somehow. Could also be neighborhood dogs or coyotes relieving themselves on them. You may want to check on them in the evenings with a flashlight to see what might be out there animal wise. Or see if anyone was spraying anything in the area, working on vehicles and tossing solvents or fuel without regard to where they disposed of the products.
