I have been growing turmeric in my garden but the produce rots easily.
If it is rotting easily, then it might be a bit too wet where you currently have it. If the kitchen garden would be a bit drier, it should do well there.
I live in Laurel, Md ( zone 7). Brought potted tumerick, ginger and gardenia inside for the winter. My house doesn’t get enough light. I bought grow lights. How far away should they be from the plants
This is a subject with many, many variables. I will need to know what kind of lights, and what wattage. This will determine how close they should be. If you have access to a PAR meter, then I can give you exact numbers to work with as far as how much light they should be receiving. Otherwise, I cannot give you a good answer without knowing some of these things.
Examples: If you have a 4 bulb fluorescent fixture, you will be looking at about 1 or 2 feet from the plant.
If we are talking HID bulbs such as metal halide or high pressure sodium at, let's say, 400 watts then you will want these to be about 3 or 4 feet from the plants.
If I can get this information from you then I will be more that glad to help you out.
I have some Turmeric roots. Can I plant them to grow more, and how do I look after them?
Yes, it is very possible to plant this well known type of ginger! This article will help you get started: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/herbs/turmeric/growing-turmeric-plants.htm
There are one or two normal looking pieces and then a lot of bulb shaped things. Just wondering if the bulb shapes are still edible or what they are. Thank you
The rhizomes, what you are used to seeing, are the active growing portion of the root. Those larger tubers are nutrient storage. Both are edible, and part of the same plant.
Here is more information on the care of the plant:
