My yellow squash turns dark orange shortly after the flower falls off. This is the first time we've had this problem. Can you tell me why they are doing this and how to stop it?
My plants are green and healthy but my squash get no bigger than 3 inches and shrivel and die. Why?

My yellow squash and zucchini are growing out of the ground. They have been planted in hills with proper planting methods but for some reason the plant starts to grow out of the ground and then has super poor yields. I have gotten two edible yellow squash out of two plants. They flower, start to grow a squash but then it rots and dies. the part that grows out of the ground ends up looking like a thick brown root. Please help! I can't keep my squash in the ground.
Did you plant seeds, or started plants? Most experienced gardeners prefer to start squash from seed. Also, did you work the soil deeply under the hills, and add lots of organic soil amendment? Don't be discouraged. Often with gardening you need to try several approaches before you find what works.
I have heard from many people that I should put cardboard underneath my acorn squash, and all my other squash, in order to keep it from rotting or getting damaged by pests and such. Is this true? Right now many are on sand/dirt and others are sitting in green weeds and grass, since they have stretched into my lawn 30 feet away..... If so, I have a lot of work to do right away, since I have so many types and plenty of squash plants! Please give me an answer.....thank you!!!!
You don't have to put cardboard down, although some people do. I think mostly it's used to make a place for squash bugs to hide during the day, so they can be easily found and eliminated by had -- or rather by foot. Here's an article with some squash growing tips (no mention of cardboard.) https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/squash/tips-for-growing-squash.htm
My female squash seems to stop grow when the blossom falls off, is this normal? I have multiple male and female growth, flowering like crazy and several female buds very closely together. Can too many females close together be too much for one plant?
the blossom will fall off when the flower is pollinated, this should cause the vine to set fruit. watch and see if the base of the flower startes to enlarge.
Why are some of my yellow squash hard, dark yellow/gold color with greenish colored pulp and large seeds inside, and some are normal, all from the same plant?
It all has to do with how long a squash has been left on the vine. The squash on your vines will not all be at the same level of maturity. If you wait too long to harvest squash after it's ready you will be confronted with squash that is hard, dark yellow with large seeds inside.
