I have a very large, mature scotch broom plant that is currently in bloom, however there are several large branches on the back of it that look dead. If I cut them, there will be a huge hole in the plant so I’m not sure if I should just let it go?
Correcting will take a few years, since pruning must be done very slowly over time. This is achievable, but it is much easier to do annual pruning as the plants ages from young to mature.
This article will help you to how and when to start pruning this back into order:

broomstick. Is it dead? Had about 7 years was green when we left for one week vacation and completely brown . Looks like a brown dried out broomstick
Try cutting it down by half and continue to water. Hopefully it will send up new, green shoots. However, if you see any new buds forming, do not trim but continue to water.
