I would wait until the threat of cold weather has passed before pruning this up. This will give it the best chance at survival. It is best to wait until you see new growth before you try and fix it.

It makes no difference what angle you prune the stems. Try to prune just above a node.

The loss of older, lower leaves could be due to inadequate light or watering lapses. Unfortunately, there is no way to get leaves lower down as this plant does not normally branch.

The only remedy is to prune off the top section to a height that you prefer. New growth will then emerge on the stem starting just below where you make the pruning cut.

Going forward, provide as much indoor light as possible and water when the top half-inch of soil feels dry.

A commercial potting soil should be sufficient for your Schefflera plant.
I do caution you on the size pot, generally you should only go up one size from the existing container.
Too large of pot can lead to overwatering and root rot. Make sure the soil is drying between waterings.
Also check the amount of light your plant is receiving. Too little sunlight can lead to a floppy plant.

Pruning can help a leggy or overgrown plant.

I have brought many of these back from death. There are a few things that usually happen to cause this. A lack of light, and nutrients will be the first things to correct. It won't tolerate full sun, but it does need very bright, indirect light. I would fertilize with an all purpose slow release every year. This will bring it back to life.

Here is where you need to be brave. Prune the plant back to a point on the main stem that you want the new stems to grow.

Use clean and sterile knife or garden shears.

Some common problems with Schefflera is the leaves turning black and falling off and wrinkled leaf tips. Leaves turning black and falling off is a sign that the plant is being over-watered. Wrinkled leaf tips is a sign the soil is being kept too dry.
