The ants cover the flower buds before they even open, and then the buds seem to dry up
No, but the aphids that they are farming are.

My plant’s leaves are yellowing
This looks like a need for fertilization. Hibiscus of any sort, including Rose of Sharon, will be quite hungry throughout the year. This one is more sensitive to overfeeding than most, but it will suffer from underfeeding in container. It will be a balancing act, in container.

I've had ants all over my young Rose of Sharon this summer. But a few weeks ago I began seeing black flecks of something all over the flowers. What is this (see photos)? And what can I do to get rid of it/prevent it in the future. Thanks!
The pictures are too far away to accurately identify the pests but aphids are a common pest of Rose of Sharon,. they can be black and they leave a sugary excrement called honeydew that ants love.

The white stuff in at the base of the bush.
It likely is powdery mildew. These articles should help:

soapy water bucket solutions, but nothing works. help me please. ty. every spring without fail japanese beetles eat all the leaves and blooms off of my roses and rose of sharon plants. they are just horrible.
You have the sympathy of every gardener who has battled Japanese beetles. Preventing them is difficult. They fly in every season. Hand picking and dropping them in the soapy water is the organic way to dispose of them like you have tried. You can also cover their favorite plants with netting for a couple of months. Whatever you do, don't use the traps that attract them, then zap them. Those only bring them in from miles around.
Our rosarian recommends a natural bacteria called milky spore. Read more:

I was interested in replacing a failed lilac bush with a rose of sharon. I would like to have a flowering bush in my front garden next to my front stairs. My concern is the height potential of the Rose of Sharon. Maybe another suggestion for a medium height Flowering bush. We have already had Rhododendron.
It would depend on the amount of sun. Since you had a rhododendron, I'm wondering if it is a shady situation, although a lilac needs fun sun. For part sun, a hydrangea is always nice. They are so popular these days. There are heights for every situation. I would caution though not to get a mophead (the one with the big round clusters of pink or blue) because they bloom on buds formed the previous season and often are nipped in late freezes or pruned off.
