Our pussy willows are well established. I plan on building up the area where they are planted with 8 to 10 inches of soil, covering the root line. Will the pussy willows survive this or will I smother them?
Building up soil around the base of the tree will inhibit gas exchange by cutting off the supply of oxygen to the roots. The excess soil will also encourage root girdling, which will eventually lead to the death of the tree. It is recommended to keep excess soil/mulch at least 4-5 inches from the root flare of the tree to ensure good health.
COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT WOULD CAUSE A HEALTHY SMALL PUSSYWILLOW TREE TO DIE. IT WAS GROWING WELL FOR SEVERAL YEARS, THEN STARTED DYING ON ONE SIDE AND THEN THE REST OF IT DIED. IT IS ONE OF THE MINATURE TREES . VERY BEAUTIFUL AND THE LITTLE BIRDS LOVED HIDING IN THE CROOKED BRANCHES THAT GREW ON IT.
It sounds like the soil sustained an infection. You can return the soil to normal by adding dolomitic lime, and wettable sulfur. This will kill off anything living in it, and bring the pH back to a suitable condition.
I just bought a very small weeping pussy willow tree today. The problem I have is I live in the Lowcountry of South Carolina zone 8b. I have heard that these trees do not do well here due to the extremely hot summers. I have only seen 3 of these trees in my entire life (and one was at a family member's home in Michigan...LOL) I have no idea how to grow them or tend them. I have always loved the way they look and thought I would give it a shot. Any tips for planting so I can keep my little tree alive? I could use all the help I can get including tips on southern sun exposure, soil content, watering and all that. Thanks y'all!
You are on the very edge of its growing zone. This means that it will tolerate the heat of your area, but may require a little help.
If you can grow it in a large container, then you can move it to shade on the hotter days. If you want it in the ground, then I would recommend putting it in partial shade, to hide it from the summer, midday sun.
Make sure to keep it well watered during the hot season. This will help keep the root zone a little cooler.

Thank you! I will certainly give this a shot. Wish me luck!
Hi, I'm trying to identify the type of pussy willow I have growing here in Whitehall PA zone 6b. I inherited it when I bought my house 13 years ago. I have attached 3 different photos for you to see Thanks, Chris
There is not a way to determine the type of Pussy Willow you are growing from your image.
You could see if you County Extension Office has a list of common varieties in your area.

How long are pussy willow roots?
Pussy Willow have deep and spreading roots and are considered invasive.
Beautiful wen I bought it started to grow green leaves but the leaves are turning brown and brittle. It is still in original pot should I plant it in the garden. Don't want to lose it please help
Yes, I would plant out your tree, it is likely stressed and may be needing more water in a container.
