Relating to your article: www.gardeningknowhow.com/trees-shrubs/how-to-root-cuttings-from-various-shrubs-bushes-and-trees. htm It says, "Check the plant every two weeks or so to see if roots have developed. " and "Once roots have developed. . . .they're ready to grow. " How do you check for roots, and what is a practical criterion to distinguish 'developed' from undeveloped roots?
Check for root development by gently pulling on the cutting. If itshows some resistance, then roots have usually developed. If it pulls out too easily, then it should be left alone and rechecked within another week or two.

Can a sucker become a decent tree?
These suckers can be transplanted and have a good chance of surviving. You need to make sure that they have some roots of their own when you move them. Depending on their size, you may want to pot the little trees up for at least a whole season before planting out in the yard. This way they will be able to form stronger roots.
How to take root cuttings?
Please expand the question. Are you asking how to divide a plant with stolon's or rhizomes? Are you asking how to root a cutting? What type plant? You cannot propagate a plant by roots alone, you must have vegetative material with the capability t o send out new growth.
I read your article on starting shrubs from cuttings. I could only find liquid rooting hormone and used it. These are softwood cuttings. I planted them 2 days ago. There is "fuzz" and I'm hoping not mold growing on the cuttings. Is this normal? Should I take out of plastic bags? Help? Thanks, Chris
They need to air out some. I would suggest adding some holes in the plastic for ventilation.
