You will need to help the Pothos attach itself to the railings or trellis.
I would purchase plant twisting wire from a garden center. You can cut the wire to small pieces to attach the vines unto the rails.

This is commonly caused by over watering. When you go to water, feel the top inch or so of the soil. If it is dry, water the plant, if it is not, do not water the plant. This will ensure you are watering to the plant's needs. If you feel that you have not been over watering your plant and would like additional reasons as to why it may be turning yellow, this article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/problems/plant-leaves-turn-yellow.htm

A Pothos is quite easy to grow and actually prefers a drier soil. You could most likely water the plant before you leave and it would be fine for a few weeks at a time.
A month may be a bit long to go for water.
Succulent plants may be a good option for you. A Jade plant can also go quite a bit of time in between watering.

It depends how big the container is and how fast you want them to fill out the container. Because pothos is a vine, one plant won't fill out a broad container very well, so planting a few is recommended. If you have a small container, one plant would be fine.

Pothos is a very easy to grow plant that is forgiving of many growing conditions.

Choose a pot that comfortably fits the root system with an inch of so of new grow space around the root ball.
Do not go to large of a pot size as this can lead to overwatering.

Make sure the pot has a good drainage hole and use a good quality potting soil.

As long as you pothos looks good, there's no need to worry about whether the roots are crowded or spread out. I've seen root-bound pothos doing just as well as those with their roots spread out. Pothos is an extremely common and popular houseplant because it accepts growing in a wide variety of conditions.

Make sure you are not over watering your plant. Pothos soil can be on the dry side. Root Rot can cause spots and yellowing leaves.
