I live in Northern Maine. I planted 3 variety's of tall phlox about 26 bare roots on May 20th. I planted them in big containers until I had a bed prepared for them. Only 3 of the 26 have sprouted any green. And are only about 2 inches tall. Yesterday I prepared a bed to transfer them to, and was shocked to see all very healthy roots, but absolutely NO green sprouts on them. I have only had to water the containers once as we have had a very rainy season so far. And it has been cooler overall than normal. All my other perennials (ones I planted this spring and older ones) are all thriving. They seem to be loving this weather, including my vegetable gardens. But the Phlox has me baffled.
The soil may have been an issue. If the soil was not light enough to allow good drainage and oxygen to the plant roots it may have stunted the growth. Watering only once in this time period seems to indicate heavy soil that is not draining.
Plant them out and see how they do.

My summer flox is in full bloom. But... the stalks a turning brown and wilting. Help.
This is very common during the hottest times of summer unless they get some afternoon shade. I assume it is well-watered. I have not known the leaf drop to affect bloom or next year's plant. That's the good news!
My phlox are yellow and drying out. Whats wrong and what can I do?

Thanks to all for the answers to my Gardenia problem, now I have another question on planting Phlox seeds. We live in the Chicago land area, zone 5 and my Phlox are beautiful and I ordered several varieties of Phlox seeds, when should I plant / start them, now or in the Spring. Thanks.
Hello,
Thank you for sending us your gardening question. It is easier to grow phlox from cuttings/transplants than from seed. However, if you wish to try seeds, do so in the Spring.

My tall phlox have had powdery mildew 2 years in a row now. I cut them all down and am wondering what to do to get rid of this fungus. Is it in the soil and should I treat it? I have a lot of phlox in my garden and just love them. This picture shows them when they were healthy.
Though Powdery Mildew is not pretty in the garden, it rarely harms the plants.
If you garden, at some point you will experience Powdery Mildew on plants.

I have new phlox plants, what’s a good fertilizer an how much
A balanced 10-10-10 will do just fine. Use it according to the packaging or, alternatively You can apply a top dressing of compost. Either way will be fine. This article will help with the care of phlox: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/phlox/growing-garden-phlox.htm
