We have nut grass or sedge in two lawn areas and three garden beds. I grow a lot of food for us and several other families and do it all organically. So far I have tried digging out the soil very deeply and sifting it but the nut grass comes back within a week thicker than ever. How do I eradicate it?
Ugh, this is THE hardest weed to get rid of in my book...best thing is to stay on top of pulling it up, making sure you get the root, bc it spreads BY root, and pull it up as soon as you can. its going to take a while to get rid of it all. Problem is by the time its big enough to pull it up, the roots have spread too. Its a tough battle. is it localized enough that you can try digging it up with a spade.
Digging and using a selective herbicide are the best chances of controlling.
These were planted in front of our house. We requested dwarf plants that are evergreen. So, I am concerned about the height these plant can grow. BTW, I have really appreciated the help I have received in the past. This is a wonderful helpful site.
It is, certainly, a type of grass. The way that it grows looks like, maybe, dwarf bamboo, or some similar cane type grass. It will be very hard to tell many grasses apart. One thing is for certain... You can safely prune these to your desired height with no damage to the plant. Grasses, no matter the type, tend to be pretty resilient to pruning, unless it is some specialty grass that is known to be finicky.
Keep track of its growth, and send in more pics once it is larger, and/or flowers! This can help me to get a more accurate ID.
I live in zone 5. Should I cut my blood grass down in November?
I would always wait until spring, right before the new growth comes back. This will give you the best results.
A well intentioned woman stopped by our house today and informed us that the patch of phragmities growing in the consistantly wet spot of our back yard is a non-native plant with many negative and few positive attributes. It is a beautiful natural barrier to road traffic. Question: Is it an ecological threat? Question: Is there a native species that looks as good and grows as tall?
This will not be a concern as long as the grass does not have a tendency to spread. If this is the case, then it may not be an ecologically sound grass. This website will help you with the native grasses of your area: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10370_12146_12209---,00.html
Good info on site but I cannot buy this plant in UK or grass seeds
We do not usually recommend places to purchase, nor do we sell, but I will recommend places like Amazon, Etsy, or Ebay. Many sellers will have what you are looking for.
April 13, 2013 Bonnie L Grant published an Article on Planting Switchgrass. There is a picture of three Switchgrass and would like to know the name of it ? It is lovely! Thank You! Donna Ryan. Dhryan07@comcast. net
I would like to plant grasses in a 2'x 20'slot that will grow to at least 6' tall. There is a large Bass Linden to the west. Will Miscanthus Gracimillus flop forward ? What would you recommend for this location ? Also looking for a flowering vine or bush for end area that has more shade (3rd photo). Honeysuckle ? Thanks.
It would be hard to say without knowing your USDA zone. In the meantime, here are some articles that will help out: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/foliage/ornamental-grass
