My backyard gets sprayed for weeds and I don't want any chemicals in my food. I have never been good at growing plants and want to start slow. I love vegetables and fruit. I live in GA. I don't want any snakes or pests messing with my food. Where do I start??? I want to be more self-sufficient. I have an 8,000 sq ft back yard.
Since your yard is sprayed, you might consider a raised bed garden, so the spray doesn't get in your crops. Here are some articles on raised beds and veggies to get you headed in the right direction.

I am close to being sold on total organic gardening for entire landscapes. However, when looking for specific questions, fruit and veg. organic gardening is discussed, not entire lawns & landscape. Please proved links or info on how to landscape organically. Thank you.
The principles remain the same. They are, simply, scaled up. Using USDA certified organic nutrients and compost does not have to be restricted to vegetables. The same concepts, and ingredients can be used, widespread. Though if you choose to use compost as your lawn fertilizer, it will be a daunting task. I would recommend making large volumes of compost tea to maintain large areas.
Here is an article that will give you a run-down of the basics:
