my friend can't understand why the leaves on her oak tree are turning grey? I have read about a disease affecting oaks?
There are a few different things that this could be depending on exactly how it looks. These articles will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/tgen/bacterial-leaf-scorch-disease.htm

The ground cover I need will be under a big oak tree.
A bit of research shows that Island gooseberry, hosta or caladium might be good choices in your area.
Here's an article with more suggestions:

I have a huge oak tree and grass is very impossible to grow . Have hired Trugreen, no luck. Have planted many varieties of shady grass seed, very fragile looking and is gone before summer and nothing left by next spring. Want to plant low maintenance 1'-2" shady fast growing ground cover. Have clay and sand soil. What do you suggest the best kind to get? Area is about 6'x 8' . Am at my wit's end, hate the the ugly barren ground where grass should be and was many years ago.
The best thing to put under trees is mulch out to the drip line. No need to look at barren soil.
If you prefer ground cover, consider mosses. They can survive the shade created by the trees, and they will be low maintenance other than removing debris.

The oak tree behind our house has this big black mark and is oozing brown sticky stuff from it. Is it a viral/bacterial infection and do I need to deal with it to stop it spreading to other trees? Thanks
It is, likely, bacterial! Usually, infections such as these are not treatable in older trees. Issues like this will, usually, resolve themselves over time, and will not require human intervention.
Here is an article that will give you some more information on bacterial infections in trees: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/tgen/wetwood-bleeding-trees.htm
We have been watering them regularly and have a water irrigation loop installed, the leaves from last year are still on some of the trees. Do they not grow much in the first year after being disturbed.
This can be normal, to a degree. I would be careful with watering, though. It will only need water once the soil is completely dry down to about 2 or 3 inches. Overwatering is one of the most common reasons that a transplant will fail.
I would try removing the leaves, and giving the very tips of the branch a snip. Sometimes this can kickstart things.

I planted this oak tree 9 month ago and have watered and fertilized it just as I thought I should. It was beautiful until a few days ago and suddenly I noticed yellow/dead leaves close to the trunk. The limbs further out are still green. What could cause this? The trunk diameter is about 5-6 inches.
It may be a bacterial infection that currently has no cure. This article will offer more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/oak/xylella-oak-leaf-scorch.htm
Alternatively, it could be a fungal infection. I would have an arborist come out and look.

Hello, I live in Plano Texas 75074 and I have a Oak tree planted in front my house. It is fairly young,I think 6-7 years old. It started the season good but then all of a sudden tree's foliage started to turn brown and curl. It lost some of its leaves. Could you help me find what is wrong with my tree and is there a way to help it get better? I think pictures will do a better job telling you what is wrong. Thanks, Ali Topuz.
It appears to be Fire Blight. This has no cure, but there are methods to control the symptoms. This article will help:
