In Colorado Springs, when is the very best time to put on the shredded cedar (medium, without coloring) mulch to my holly bushes and roses?
Mulching is especially beneficial both in fall and spring, and can be useful at other times of year as well. September or October is a great time to mulch the area above the root systems of your shrubs to shield them from the late fall and winter cold.
What does mulch look like after deterioration? How long does it take for this process?
The appearance of mulch after deterioration and the time required will depend on the material it's made from. Mulch made of large particles (like coarse wood mulch) will take longer to decompose than mulch made of small particles (like finely chopped wood mulch or pine needle mulch). There is also mulch made from materials like rubber, but it's not a good idea to let these deteriorate in your garden.
What is the best time to mulch in northeast Ohio?
Applying mulch is generally a spring chore, as you are cleaning gardens, pruning trees and shrubs and getting your vegetable beds ready.

I have seen red mulch at a neighbor's home that is NOT lava rock. It's not shredded bark that is dyed red. It is small rocks, that are more or less rectangular. The rocks are a little bigger in size than, say, home fries. I have not seen this for sale anywhere. Would you be able to identify it, please? Thank you!
My best guess is that your neighbor is mulching with brick chips. Does it look anything like this? https://generalshale.com/products/utility-brick/brick-chips/#sizes
We have small rock mulch in our front flower beds. I have redone the beds with compose cow mature and peat moss, I have installed new landscaping paper to keep the weeds out of the bed, I purchase five scrubs for the bed. My question is how can I use the rock mulch combined with rubber mulch to add color and style to my bed.
I have seen some beautiful beds that have wood mulch in areas and rock mulch in other spots, the two are usually separated by bricks or large stones so they don't run together and each stand out on their own because of the edging between them. Neither rock or rubber mulch is all that great for the plants themselves because they both heat up in the sun so much and add no nutrients to the soil. Below are some links about mulch. Rubber mulch has many drawbacks

Good day! Thanks for your help! After applying the mulch, when we walk on the mulch, it compresses..we are wondering if we should be compressing the mulch as a final step or to leave it fluffy? Huge thanks! Pam Riordan Franklin, MA
The mulch naturally compresses over time.
I generally open a bag, dump it out in a scattered pattern and rake it to the depth that is needed.
