Mulching is especially beneficial both in fall and spring, and can be useful at other times of year as well. September or October is a great time to mulch the area above the root systems of your shrubs to shield them from the late fall and winter cold.

The appearance of mulch after deterioration and the time required will depend on the material it's made from. Mulch made of large particles (like coarse wood mulch) will take longer to decompose than mulch made of small particles (like finely chopped wood mulch or pine needle mulch). There is also mulch made from materials like rubber, but it's not a good idea to let these deteriorate in your garden.

I have seen some beautiful beds that have wood mulch in areas and rock mulch in other spots, the two are usually separated by bricks or large stones so they don't run together and each stand out on their own because of the edging between them. Neither rock or rubber mulch is all that great for the plants themselves because they both heat up in the sun so much and add no nutrients to the soil. Below are some links about mulch. Rubber mulch has many drawbacks

The mulch naturally compresses over time.
I generally open a bag, dump it out in a scattered pattern and rake it to the depth that is needed.
