I just acquired an area of grass, 30x20, that I don't want to have to cut or maintain. Any chance ii can put down ground cover that will grow with the grass (don't want to have to take up the grass) and kill the grass eventually. . . Thanks. liz
Please take a look at this article as the Monkey Grass may be an option for you. It is tough to find a ground cover that will totally take out the grass, as you need something very aggressive to do that. Keep in mind that the very aggressive ground cover needed to do this can become a problem to any garden areas, yours and the neighbors. They can become a nightmare to control! I will provide a link to some ground cover options too.
Could you tell me the best way to remove lawn and replace with ground covering lava rock?
You can kill off the grass and then lay down plastic or some other weed barrier. Then you can lay the lava rock down.

We are in a drought area, watering only once a week or drip system. My front yard is lawn, plants and several trees. I would like to replace my lawn with either drought tolerant plants, some other type of growth. I don't care for the all rocks, gravel and pebbles look. As well as my two trees that are planted in the lawn, roots are growing above the ground.
Xeriscaping is what you need to look at. While people frequently associate it with the gravel look, it is actually not meant to be that. We have several articles on it that you would find helpful. You can find them here:

Dandelions have overtaken my lawn except where clover is present. Will clover or any other kind of ground cover take over dandelion? I live in a neighborhood with strict lawn care guidelines but I refuse to support the chemical companies that have knowingly poisoned our planet. I don't mind dandelions, but they get tall so fast. Clover is much softer and grows much slower, hence my question.
There are alternatives to lawn grass, some of which may compete with dandelion. This article may give you some ideas: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/lawn-care/lawn-substitutes/lagen/plant-alternatives-to-traditional-lawn-grass.htm
Live in very hot area (91367). Should I wait until fall to replace grass when it cools off?
As long as you can provide sufficient moisture for the newly planted succulents to establish themselves, you can remove the grass anytime. This article has some tips on starting a succulent garden: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/cacti-succulents/scgen/outdoor-succulent-garden.htm
My grass died in the front lawn area. I removed all the dead grass. Now just have hard clay ground. I would like some kind of low maintaince ground cover. Full sun.

I want to replace my lawn with creeping thyme. After I remove my lawn, how do I prepare the dirt to plant? Thank you
Creeping Thyme and Wooly Thyme can be used as an alternative lawn. Keep in my they would not be good for a high traffic area.
