They don't need to be trimmed back completely. Usually just one third, but you can go lower. This article will explain this in more detail: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/lantana/lantana-pruning.htm

It depends on the variety, so it's best to look up specific variety information. Small lantana plants can be spaced about 24-36 inches apart, but there are also those that grow as larger shrubs and can be spaced about 4-5 feet apart. It also depends how you want them to look- space farther apart for separate plants, or closer together if you want them to grow together as a ground cover or large mound.

It sounds like the roots are extending out of the pot.

Lantana roots are knotted looking and have larger and smaller areas, it could appear bean like.

If it's just a few roots, you can root prune the plant; but if it is very root bound you may want to repot to 1 size larger pot-again!
Use a good quality potting soil.

It sounds like the plant didn't take up water from it's roots.
Make sure the pot was adequately sized for the plant. Too large of a container can lead to overwatering.

Make sure the soil was a light commercial soil that is well draining.

Make sure the container has a drainage hole.

Sometimes you just can't explain the loss of a plant.

It would appear that all of these will do well with occasional pruning. You can cut them to your preferred height without much damage. This will be your only way to control this container.

What is your USDA zone? Sometimes, if you are on the edge of where they can survive, a cool winter can kill them off. This has been a primary focus for me this year, as it has been a cool winter. Many have lost plants, as they were right on the edge of where they can survive.

Unfortunately, this happens from time to time, and the only option will be to replant.
