I would like to know what the best Japanese plants would be to use in a long area but does not use a lot of water and isn't a tree (more like bushes or flowers).

I live in Inyokern, CA. It gets up to 120 F. and down to around 30 F. What kind of Japanese plants can I use in the heat? I would love to have a Japanese garden in my yard.
