Good day I live in south africa its kind of cold on and off I have some planted herbs and some vegetables I would like to know if I need to get some growing flourescant lights for when there is no sun. I have planted tomatos and some lemons as well which I know needs lots of sun. Please help im a beginner Thank you kindly
Most vegetables and Herbs need a full sun location to grow and produce.
You can add artificial light to help them.

I bought a Miranda Bowl consisting of lettuce, rocket, coriander, parsley and mint. Where do I keep it indoors and how much water they need. It's also called herbs for salad.
They will do best in a south-facing window. If you have indoor horticultural lighting, this will be best. But a south-facing window will do just fine.
Watering takes a little getting used to. Just water enough to keep the soil moist. You don't want it wet, or dry but you do want to keep it in between.
Hi, I'm just starting to get into gardening and trying to grow a few herbs and a chilli plant. I found a recipe for homemade fungicide using some baking soda mixed with water and a little bit of detergent. I sprayed my plant and now there is a white residue on my basil and chilli plant. My question is, is that normal, and is it actually harmful to put a little bit of detergent in the mixture (either for the plant but especially for people eating the herbs!)? Of course, I'll rinse anything before I eat, but will that be enough? Thanks Ryan
Yes, the use of baking soda is safe for people eating the plants- simply wash the residue off first. As for the detergent, I use a small amount of dish detergent, since this is sure to be safe for humans once rinsed off. It is also fine for plants. Too-frequent sprays can possibly harm the plant if a lot of residue blocks photosynthesis, but infrequent use or use to control a specific fungal infestation is helpful.
Do you have any suggestions for combinations that may work well. There is lots written about herbs and veg together, but not much on herbs and non edibles . For example I would think some herbs (Mediterranean) and succulents may mix well because of the soil type.
You are correct. They should do fine together. Things like marigolds and nasturtium give benefit to the plants they are set near.
The only caution that I have is to make sure that the plants near your herbs are not toxic, to avoid any contamination.

I am very new to gardening and am attempting to put in a border at the far end of my garden. The border is about 1m wide by 3m long at the southern boundary flanked by the 6ft fence to the south and a patio to the north. The soil is quite stony and I have started to prepare it by mixing in a 40L bag of peat-free compost to improve it and will probably add a bit more to raise the level slightly. The rest of my garden is just lawn and gravel, so this really is a blank canvas. I like the idea of a British "wildlife-friendly" country garden but also herbs and fruit trees. I have no clue of the names of most types of plants and gardening centres are just bewildering with their choice. Where do I start with planting ideas?
It sounds like you have a wonderful garden in mind!
