I have a gardenia plant I bought last summer. It was blooming well. I brought it indoors as the weather was getting cold. The leaves started turning yellow and are falling one by one from bottom up. Now some of the top leaves are turning dark brown, drying, and falling. I do not have a humidifier yet and have kept the plant away from direct hot air blowing from the home heating system.
The plant was infested by white flies toward the end of the summer and I had sprayed it with recommended pesticide. I have now purchased a can of SAFER houseplant insect killer (containing pyrethrins) which I have not applied yet. What do you think I should do?
It sounds like it is suffering from too little humidity. I would set it on a pebble tray with water to raise the humidity around the plant.
You can treat the plant with the Safer. That should not hurt it.
We have just planted a couple of gardenias, which are healthy apart from the fact that something is eating the buds before they flower and then they fall. Can you help?
It sounds like you may have thrips. This article may help:

I think my gardenia has aphids. I was told that I should purchase a soap bath, specifically insecticidal soap, which I did. It seems that since I have been using it, it has gotten worse. The leaves also turn yellow and drop off. The stems are covered with a white, sticky substance. This plant has been in the house ever since I purchased it. Can you help me by telling me what to purchase to get rid of these pests?
I would recommend spraying the plant with neem oil. It is very effective against aphids. In addition, it is organic, being safe for other plants as well as harmless to pets and people. Hi, I need to prune my gardenia fairly severely to get it back to a reasonable size. If I prune it back to the point that there are no leaves, will this kill or damage the bush. Thank you, Bob
Yes, it could kill it. With these plants, it is best not to take more than 1/3 of the plant per year. Any more than that can kill the bush. You can remove 1/3 this year, then next year take another 1/3 and so on until it is back to a manageable size.
At what time of the year should a gardenia be pruned?
Right after the blooms have faded is the best time to prune a gardenia. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/gardenia/when-to-prune-a-gardenia.htm
My gardenia plant is an indoor plant. It has a white, sticky substance that is on the stems and up in the cluster of leaves. Do you know what it is and how to take care of it? The plant is still blooming, but new growth look like it is being attacked, not all but some.
Sounds like spider mites or mealybugs may be the culprit. These articles should be helpful for spider mites: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/spider-mite-detection-and-spider-mite-natural-control.htm
