I have an Esperanza in a large pot outside. It froze before Christmas so I cut it back thinking it would come out this spring. To date, it has not shown any signs of life. Did I do wrong, & will it come out later on? Thanks, Lil Maxwell

March 14, 2018A.Esperanza can tolerate some cold, and die back when planted in the garden.
When you have the plants potted, they cannot take as cold of temperatures and the roots can suffer damage or die off.You can store the pots in a warmer location during winter or wrap them with insulating blankets to protect the roots.
If you are not seeing any new growth your plant has likely died.

Are the Yellow bell plants invasive? Can they damage house foundations? How bushy do they grow? I want to grow them in pots to climb up a trellis. Thank you

April 21, 2018A.Yellow Bells, or Tecoma stans, is native to Arizona and is not considered invasive there, although it is considered invasive in some states where it is not native. It should also not damage the foundation, as long as you plant it far enough away for the size at maturity- they can reach 15-20 feet height and 5-10 feet spread at maturity, but if planted in pots they would probably stay smaller.
The plant grows in the shape of a large shrub with an oval shape, so yes, they are pretty bushy. They can also be pruned to the desired shape, including a small tree with one trunk.

Certified ExpertA.The best time to take seeds will be once the pod a dried on its own and split. This will be when seeds are at peak maturity. Taking them before this point will decrease germination rates, but can still be done.
Just make sure to watch the pods closely, and catch them as they start to die off, but before they open.

If this is recently purchased and planted; you may be seeing flower buds as this plant should bloom in the spring.

July 28, 2019A.I couldn't find solid information that Esperanza is poisonous. A plant that is toxic can cause anything from nausea to life-threatening illness to rash. It is all labeled toxicity. The lack of firm information leads me to believe there just haven't been documented illness from Esperanza. https://www.wildflower.org/expert/show.php?id=2524.

Trophy Club, TX 76262Q.Pruning Before Moving Potted Esperanza, Mandevilla And Plumbago Plants Indoors For Winter?
I live in North Texas and have an 8' x 8' heated greenhouse to house several bougainvilleas. My problem is I have limited space to house my 7'x 4' esperanza, 4' x 4' plumbago and 4 mandavillas. I have no room in my yard to increase the size of my greenhouse leaving reducing the number of bougainvilleas which have taken me several years to get them to bloom. I give away several "bougies" each year to make room for newly propagated "bougies" from my 6' x 5' "mother bougie".

Certified ExpertA.I show that you are in USDA zone 8a, so you do have temperatures below freezing. Yes, you can cut back your plants and check for insects before bringing them in for the winter. You also could take cuttings and start new plants to save space.

November 2, 2019A.I live in your area as well. I always prune in spring, even when bringing inside for winter. Pull off dead leaves and cut back any dead stems but keep it at a minimum.
Then give them a nice prune when spring comes. I find this makes most of mine fuller when they come back.Was this answer useful?00
