Hi, I just moved from south east Texas to North Texas, and as it does not get nearly as hot and there's TRUE winters up here I'm attempting to fill my property up with many of my favorites. I am currently looking at elderberry plants, 2 cultivars of course. I found live plants that are 16"-20" tall. Is it alright to plant them right now as it is late June? Also, I am attempting to fill my fence up with black spanish and red flame grapes. Should I wait till their dormant season to purchase them or will it be fine to plant vines with full leaf systems on them now? Thank you, Michael Keef
You can plant now, but need to watch the watering carefully. Make sure the soil is moist and never dries out or is soggy.
Mulching with 3 to 4 inches of hardwood mulch will help with moisture and temperatures.
I have a black lace a year or so old. There is new growth on the branches but the old growth is turning brown. Searched for afids and borrowers but no sign. It sits in a pot and water on a regular basis with letting to dry every once in a while so as not to drown the roots. I'm not sure if I should prune this plant down as it is mid summer.
Elderberry is a sprawling, large shrub with very active roots. Your pot looks too small for it, IMO. Chances are it is rootbound if you didn't "pot up" significantly this spring. It does like moist soil but sitting in water over 30 minutes isn't the answer. Water will displace oxygen, something the roots need. Leaves also fall is they aren't getting some sun or if gets too much hot afternoon sun and is heat stressed. This is a hardy plant, though so I believe it will recover.
We planted 4 elderberry bushes a year and a half ago. They have grown beautifully and until recently we have had no problems. In the last month we have seen some of the lower branches die on 2 of the bushes. There do not appear to be any bugs and nothing is being eaten. The remainder of the bushes appear healthy. We live in the Midwest and our summer is quite hot and humid this year. I'm attaching a photo. Do you have any suggestions for us?

Check the soil moisture level, during hot summers your plants will need more water.

We planted a small plant this spring in Ohio. The plant has not grown at all and the tips of all the leaves are brown. It's been watered well but we did have a very hot spell. Will this recover in the spring?
Make sure the soil is moist and that it is well draining.
Certainly the excess heat can stress a plant, especially a new planting.

Our plant has not grown since we planted it this spring. The leaf tips are all brown. Any ideas?
New plant to my garden last year..2016 this year 2017 it was a picture of beauty in the Spring...The blooms were beautiful.... It has continued to grow very well, and I have no problems with it, other than it is blooming again , and it is September 1st...is this usual ?
I have seen a lot of plants, including shrubs sending up a few blooms right now. I've even seen crocus leaves popping up. I blame the weather for getting the plants out of sync but I might as well blame the eclipse for all I truly know! Anyway, unless it is putting out a full spring-like flush of blooms, your elderberry should still produce in spring just fine.
So, I see all kinds of info on growing elderberries, but not when to plant them! When is the best time frame for planting?
The best time to plant them is in spring. This will give your plants enough time to establish before winter. Here is an article that will give you more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/fruits/elderberry/planting-elderberry.htm
